Halebidu (which was previously called Dorasamudra or Dwarasamudra) was the regal capital of the Hoysala Empire in the 12th century. It is home to one of the best examples of Hoysala architecture.

Halebidu is just 16 km away from the one more historical place Belur. The distance is 149 km to Mysore and 31 km to Hassan.
FACTS ABOUT HALEBID
1. If one stands on the platform of the temple at Halebidu and sees around he will see the hills opposite and two big bulls facing the temple and Ganesha figure on the south.
2. This magnificent temple town had to bear the brunt of raids by marauding invaders, who robbed it of its treasures, leaving behind the ruins of the once-magnificent Shiva temple.
3. The Hoysala temples are manifestations of the Vesara style of temple architecture characterized by star-shaped structures set upon raised platforms. The Vesara style was initiated by the Badami Chalukyas and further refined by the Kalyani Chalukyas.

1. Hoysaleswara Temple : A gem of Hoysala temple architecture, the Hoysaleshwara temple is ornamented with a plethora of exquisite carvings and sculptures. It was built by Ketamalla, a minister of Hoysala ruler Vishnuvardhana, in the 12th century AD. Even after 87 years of building, this was never completed as the Delhi Sultanate invaded the Halebid by that time. In the southern side, there is a pillar with inscription of heroes carrying knives and cutting their own heads.
2. Shantaleswara Temple : Shantaleswara Temple with shrines, placed next to each other and faced towards east, dedicated to Hoysaleswara and Shantaleswara, constructed on a high platform, is made out of soft Soapstone, also known as potstone.
3. Kedareswara Temple : Kedareshwara temple, a Chalukyan style temple with two Hoysala emblems, is very famous where the sculptor’s talent seems to have overwhelmed even the goldsmith’s skill in its sheer sophistication. The mix of architecture will overwhelm anybody.
4. Basadi Halli : It is a group of Jain monasteries famous for its pillars, which are highly polished almost resembling mirrors. Basadi Halli is very near to Hoysaleswara temple.
5. Archaeological Museum : The landscaped garden in front of the Hoysaleshwara Temple serves as an Archaeological Museum. The museum houses the idols, statues, busts, and sculptures excavated by the Archaeological Department from the ruins. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed on Fridays.
