Manali is administratively a part of the Kullu district, with population of approx. 30,000. The small town was the beginning of an ancient trade route to Ladakh and, from there, over the Karakoram Pass on to Yarkand and Khotan in the Tarim Basin.

Manali, in the Vyas River valley, is an important hill station in the mountains of Himachal Pradesh, India, near the northern end of the Kullu Valley.
FACTS ABOUT MANALI
1. Manali and the surrounding area is of great significance to Indian culture and heritage as it is said to be the home of the Saptarshi, or Seven Sages.
2. The British introduced apple trees and trout, which were not native to Manali flora and fauna. To this day, apple—along with plum and pear—remains the best source of income for the majority of its inhabitants.
3. Manali is famous for adventure sports like skiing, hiking, mountaineering, paragliding, rafting, trekking, kayaking, and mountain biking. Yak skiing is a sport unique to this area.
4. Manali has become the favorite destination for honeymooners in recent years.
5. Manali is known for its shiny gompas or Buddhist monasteries. With the highest concentration of Tibetan refugees in the entire Kullu valley, it is famous for its Gadhan Thekchhokling Gompa, built in 1969.

Airways
The nearest airport is in Bhuntar (50kms). This is actually a small airport and it rather advisable to avoid air connection to Manali since this is not a very convenient means to reach Manali. Delhi is the major nearest airport, which is about 565 km away from Manali.
Railways
Manali as a popular tourist destination, has a very good network of roads. Many other prominent cities, like: Shimla (240kms), Chandigarh (272kms), Delhi (611) are located at convenient distances from Manali.
Roadways
The nearest railhead is Chandigarh. The city, which is an important rail station in northern India, is linked to major cities like Delhi, Mumbai by rail.
