The name Munnar is believed to be derived from the Malayalam words Munu (three) and aaru (river), referring to the town's strategic location at the confluence of the Muthirappuzha, Nallathanni and Kundaly rivers.

FACTS ABOUT MUNNAR
1. Sprawling tea plantations, picture book towns, winding lanes, trekking and holiday facilities make Munnar a unique experience for the tourist and traveller. Munnar is essentially a tea town. There is a large population of people from Tamil Nadu.
2. There are about 30 tea plantations in and around Munnar.
3. Munnar also has the highest peak in South India - Anamudi , which towers over 2695 m.
4. The high ranges of Munnar were earlier known as Kannan Devan Hills,named after a certain Kannan Devan,who had been land lord in the Anchanad Valley on the eastern side of the district.
5. Munnar was the favored summer resort of the erstwhile British rulers in the colonial days.
6. Munnar is sometimes called the ‘Switzerland of India'.
7. Munnar is an excellent base for trekking through the surrounding hills; for going picnicking beside a crystal-clear mountain stream; or for wildlife watching.
