Thiruvananthapuram, also known as Trivandrum, is the capital of the Indian state of Kerala and the headquarters of the Thiruvananthapuram District.

It is located on the west coast of India near the extreme south of the mainland.
TRIVANDRUM FACTS
1. Thiruvananthapuram means "Abode of Lord Ananta" in Sanskrit and Malayalam. The name derives from the deity of the Hindu temple at the centre of the city.
2. The rise of modern Thiruvananthapuram began with accession of Marthanda Varma in 1729 as the founding ruler of the princely state of Travancore (Thiruvithamkoor in the local vernacular).
3. Thiruvananthapuram easily disguises itself as a laid back quiet city to a casual observer. However, beneath it there is a hum of cultural activities. The city comes to life during the festival season of Onam in August/September, and during the tourist season later in the year.
4. Thiruvananthapuram, is a beautiful seaside city built on seven hills.
5. Referred to by Mahatma Gandhi as the "Evergreen city of India", the city is characterized by its undulating terrain of low coastal hills and busy commercial alleys.
6. The Kerala state legislative assembly and Secretariat are located here.

An excellent network of roads connects Thiruvananthapuram to all major towns and cities in South India, especially to Kollam, Alleppey, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Chennai, Madurai and Pondicherry. The Central Bus station is situated adjacent to the Central Railway Station at Thampanoor.
