The temple town of Udupi is famous for its Krishna temple established in the 13th century by the great Sanskrit philosopher, Madhavacharya. The famous 13th-century Vaishnava teacher, Madhava, is believed to have founded the temple by installing an image of Krishna he had rescued from a shipwreck .
Udipi also lends its name to the inexpensive eateries that originated here.

Udupi is located 58km north of Mangalore on the seashore.

1. Manipal, 3km away from Udipi, is the famous educational centre with its well-known Medical College.
2. Udipi has a bustling shopping area in Car Street which is in the heart of town.
3. Udipi is the original destination for the famous vegetarian South Indian cuisine and tiffin items, now so popular all over India.
4. The deity, Bala Krishna, found in the famous Udipi Krishna Temple, wears a diamond crown worth over one crore rupees ($300,000). Sometimes Krishna is dressed with a diamond dress.
5. The holy bathing tank called Madhva Sarovar is said to be fed by the Ganges every twelve years.
6. The main festival of the year is the Saptotsava (seven utsavas) festival, which is celebrated in the middle of January.

Airways
The nearest airport is the Mangalore airport located at Bajpe, 60 km away from Udupi. There are 2 flights daily from Mumbai and from Bangalore.
Railways
The railway station at Udupi falls on the Konkan Railway network and there are trains to most major cities of the state.
Roadways
Mangalore city is only 50 km away from Udupi. Express buses ply between Mangalore and Udupi at regular intervals. You can reach Bangalore with a one night journey from Udupi. There are a number of buses running daily from Mumbai to Udupi (18 - 20 hours of journey).
